What is the Best Way to Sell an RV?

A private RV sale doesn’t have to be stressful. With the right approach and tools, you can make more money than you would by selling to a dealer, because dealers need to buy low and sell high to make a profit.

We’ll walk you through the steps of privately selling your RV and show you the tools and tricks that make the process smooth and safe.

Step 1: Gather Your Paperwork

The first step in selling your RV is to collect the paperwork. The most important document is your RV’s title, which proves you’re the legal owner. If you’re unsure where your title is, now would be a good time to dig it up. You won’t be able to sell your RV without it. At the time of sale, you and the buyer will fill out the title and sign it.

If you can’t find your title, don’t panic. You can request a replacement from your state’s DMV. Start this process early, as it can take a few weeks.

Pro tip: Get a vehicle history report. It builds trust with buyers by providing transparency about your RV’s past. It can also speed things up a bit since the buyer doesn’t need to worry about it.

How To Get a Replacement Title for Your RV

If you’ve misplaced your RV’s title over the years, don’t worry. It’s a common issue, and every state has a process for requesting a replacement. Here’s what you need to do:

  1. Contact your state’s DMV or equivalent agency. Most states allow you to start the title replacement process online.
  2. Pay the replacement fee, which typically ranges from $20 to $50, depending on your state.
  3. Provide some information, including your ID, the vehicle identification number (VIN), proof of ownership (e.g., bill of sale, old registration), for motorized RVs, you may need to provide the current odometer reading.

The replacement process can take several weeks, so start early to avoid delays in your sale.

Additional Documentation for Selling Your RV

In addition to your title, you’ll want to round up some additional paperwork:

  • Maintenance records: Compile service records, receipts for upgrades, and documentation of major repairs. Service records help justify your asking price and inspire buyer trust.
  • Owner’s manual: If you still have the original owner’s manual, include it.
  • RV history report: While optional, an RV history report can be a powerful selling tool.
  • Warranty information: If your RV is under warranty, gather all relevant documents. Transferable warranties can be a strong selling point.
  • Odometer disclosure: RVs less than 16,000 lbs (and those manufactured after 2011) are required by the Truth in Mileage Act to have an odometer disclosure during sale for their first 20 years. If your RV is over 16,000 lbs and manufactured before 2011, it is exempt from the Truth in Mileage Act. You won’t legally need to submit an odometer disclosure, but buyers will want to know the mileage, so it’s good to include a disclosure anyway.

When you sell your RV with DealNow, you can include a vehicle history report to inspire buyer confidence and help you get the deal done. Our AutoCheck integration makes it easy.

Step 2: Price Your RV

Naturally, you want to get the most money possible from your RV. This is where knowledge is power. By understanding what the market will allow, you’ll price your vehicle realistically without leaving money on the table.

  1. Research the market: Check online marketplaces and RV-specific sites to see what similar models are selling for.
  2. Use valuation tools: Websites such as NADAGuides and RV Trader offer RV-specific valuation tools.
  3. Don’t forget about your RV’s unique features: Factor in upgrades, recent repairs, or special equipment.

The RV market is seasonal, so try to time your sale for spring and early summer when more people plan RV purchases and trips.

Step 3: Prepare Your RV for Sale

Imagine two identical RVs—same make, model, year, and mileage. The difference? One sparkles inside and out, while the other shows signs of neglect. The pristine RV will sell quicker and fetch a better price.

Here’s how to get your RV in top shape:

  1. Deep clean the interior: Sanitize the bathroom and kitchen areas. Shampoo carpets and upholstery. Clean windows and mirrors. Wipe down all surfaces, including cabinets and countertops.
  2. Wash and detail the exterior: Pressure wash the exterior, including the roof. Wax the body to restore shine. Clean and treat the awning. Check and clean slide-out mechanisms.
  3. Perform maintenance: Change the oil and filters if you are selling a motorized RV. Check and top up all fluids. Inspect and replace worn tires if necessary. Test all appliances and systems (water, electrical, gas).
  4. Make minor repairs: Fix leaks in the roof or around windows. Repair or replace torn screens and touch-up paint chips or scratches.
  5. Declutter and depersonalize: Remove personal items to help buyers envision the space as their own. Organize storage areas to showcase available space.

Include photographs of imperfections and damage. It’s better to be upfront with buyers than to waste time explaining undisclosed problems and haggling about your price later.

Step 4: Create a Compelling RV Listing

Unless you have a friend or family member eager to buy your RV, you’ll need to find a buyer. Most sellers list their RV online due to the wide reach and exposure.

How to Create an Attention-Grabbing RV Listing

Think of your listing as a “dating profile” for your RV. Here’s how to make it irresistible:

  1. Use high-quality photos: Capture your RV’s best features in good lighting. Include exterior shots (multiple angles, with slide-outs extended), interior spaces (living area, kitchen, bedroom(s), bathroom), storage areas, and unique features such as solar panels or outdoor kitchens.
  2. Write a compelling title: Include the RV type (Class A, Fifth Wheel, etc.), make, model, year, and a standout feature. For example: “2018 Winnebago Vista 31BE—Spacious Bunkhouse, Solar Ready!”
  3. Provide a detailed description: Start with a brief overview of the RV. Then highlight features, recent upgrades, and maintenance. Describe the floor plan, sleeping capacity, and the RV’s overall condition.
  4. List important specs: Include length, height, weight, fresh/gray/black tank capacities, generator details (if applicable), and slide-out information.
  5. Mention camping readiness: List included equipment, such as leveling blocks, sewer hoses, etc. Mention any transferable campground memberships.
  6. Disclose flaws: Be transparent about known issues or quirks.
  7. Use keywords: Include relevant terms RV buyers might search for, like “family-friendly,” “boondocking ready,” or “luxury coach.”
  8. Update regularly: Refresh your listing periodically to maintain visibility in search results and show that the RV is still available.

Save your photographs, descriptions, and listing titles to easily copy and paste them to different listing sites.

Which Website Should I List My RV On?

You have a lot of online options for listing your RV. Some sites are free, while others charge a fee but provide better services. Your RV might sell faster if you list it on more sites, but you’ll be spending more time (and potentially more money) on listings..

Let’s explore some options for selling your RV online:

  • RV-specific marketplaces: Websites such as RVTrader.com and RVT.com cater specifically to RV buyers and sellers. These platforms attract a targeted audience of RV enthusiasts.
  • Classifieds: Craigslist offers national reach and local options. Many RV owners also find success with local online classifieds or RV-focused forums.
  • Social media: Facebook Marketplace has become a popular venue for RV sales, tapping into a vast user base and allowing you to easily reach local buyers.
  • Auction sites: For unique, vintage, or high-end RVs, use specialty sites such as RV Auction or the RV section of eBay Motors. These can be effective for reaching collectors or enthusiasts willing to bid competitively.
  • Transactional marketplace: PrivateAuto is a fully transactional marketplace powered by DealNow technology. PrivateAuto combines vehicle listings with secure transaction features, streamlining the selling process from start to finish. List your RV for sale today.

With the exception of PrivateAuto, online listing sites lack transactional features to get the deal done quickly and securely. Most of them force you to expose sensitive info, introduce a lot of friction and inconvenience, and lack a way for the buyer to pay you easily.

That’s why we’ve built a transactional solution that allows you to sell your RV anywhere online, and then finish the transaction with a high degree of speed, security, and convenience.

Step 5: Screen Potential RV Buyers

When inquiries start coming in, you’ll need to separate serious buyers from time-wasters or potential scammers. Your screening goals should be to:

  • Identify genuinely interested and capable buyers.
  • Avoid wasting time with those who can’t afford your RV.
  • Protect yourself from potential scams or fraud.

DealNow weeds out scammers and tire-kickers with identity verification, funds verification, and a secure transactional dealflow. Our secure in-app messaging allows you to communicate with would-be buyers without revealing your contact info to strangers.

Step 6: Schedule and Conduct RV Viewings and Test Drives

Once you’ve found a prospective buyer, it’s time to arrange an RV viewing and test drive. Here’s how to do it safely and efficiently:

  • Arrange the details: Set a time, date, and location. Provide specific instructions that will help the buyer find the location and identify you and the RV.
  • Choose a safe location: Meet in a spacious public area that can accommodate an RV, such as a large parking lot or RV park.
  • Verify identity: Ask the prospective buyer to bring valid identification to the viewing.
  • During the viewing: Walk the buyer through your RV’s features, including living spaces and mechanical systems. Allow a test drive. Be prepared to answer questions about the RV’s history, maintenance, and unique features.
  • Trust your instincts: If you feel uncomfortable at any point, don’t hesitate to end the viewing and walk away.

With DealNow, you set your preferred location and available times. The buyer schedules the viewing through our app, and you receive a notification. No back-and-forth needed. Just show up and focus on showcasing your RV.

Step 7: Sign the Bill of Sale

After the buyer has thoroughly inspected your RV and you’ve agreed on a price, it’s time to close the deal. The RV sale culminates with you and the buyer signing an official bill of sale.

While not all states require a bill of sale for RV transactions, it’s a smart practice regardless of your location. This document formalizes the terms of your deal, protecting both parties in case of future disputes.

Here’s what a comprehensive RV bill of sale typically includes:

  • Names and addresses of both the buyer and seller
  • RV details (make, model, year, VIN)
  • RV type (class A, class C, fifth wheel, travel trailer, etc.)
  • Sale price and date of transaction
  • Odometer reading (for motorized RVs)
  • RV length and weight
  • Any warranties or “as-is” declarations
  • List of any included accessories or equipment (e.g., hitches, satellite dishes, generators)
  • Disclosure of known issues or recent major repairs

You can print two copies of your state’s bill of sale. This will suffice in most situations. But printed bills of sale don’t protect you from loss, theft, or destruction. If you do end up dealing with a bad actor, you’ll want the assurance of a digital bill of sale, stored in the cloud.

DealNow simplifies this step by providing an official, state-specific bill of sale for your RV transaction. Both parties can sign this document electronically in the DealNow mobile app. This digital process gives the buyer confidence to proceed, knowing they have a legally binding agreement. Similarly, it assures you that you’re protected before transferring ownership.

Once both parties have signed, you’ll each receive an instant notification confirming the counterparty’s signature. This electronic process not only saves time but also provides a clear digital trail of the transaction.

With the bill of sale signed, you’re legally protected and ready to move forward with the final steps of the sale.

Step 8: Get Paid

It’s time to get paid for your RV. Unfortunately, most payment methods are pretty bad for private-party RV transactions.

  • Bank drafts: While secure, they can take days to clear, delaying the completion of your sale.
  • Cashier’s checks: While secure, they can be forged. To verify the legitimacy of a cashier’s check, meet the buyer at their bank and ask a banker to confirm the check. This adds time and complexity to the transaction— and ties your sale to banks and banking hours.
  • Physical cash: Impractical and risky for large RV purchases. It opens you up to theft and counterfeiting, and you’ll have to count a lot of bills.
  • Wire transfers: Time-consuming, inconvenient and exposes your banking info.
  • Peer-to-peer payment apps: Inadequate for large fund transfers.

Some RV sellers use escrow services, but these add expense, time, and complexity to the sales process.

DealNow removes the friction associated with other methods of funds transfer. It gets you paid for your RV instantly and securely, with no limits on the amount a buyer can send. Funds are held in an FDIC-insured bank account with easy off-ramping to your regular bank account.

Step 9: Transfer Ownership Documentation (Title or MSO)

After you’ve been paid, it’s time to transfer the ownership documentation and hand over the keys. The exact process depends on whether your RV has a title or a manufacturer’s statement of origin (MSO).

If your RV has a title, follow these steps:

  1. Locate the title transfer section, typically on the back of the document.
  2. Fill out the seller’s section with the sale price, date, your signature, and current address.
  3. Have the buyer complete their section with their full name, address, signature, and date.

RVs that have never been registered probably have an MSO instead of a title.

If this is the case:

  1. Sign the MSO to release your ownership.
  2. Provide the buyer with the MSO and a bill of sale.
  3. The buyer will use these documents to obtain a title from their local DMV.

Note: Some states require notarization of the title transfer or MSO process. Check your state’s requirements in advance.

Regardless of whether you’re transferring a title or an MSO, remember to:

  • Remove all personal belongings from the RV, including items in storage compartments.
  • Provide all sets of keys, even those for additional locks or storage areas.
  • Hand over operational manuals, maintenance records, and warranty information.
  • Cancel your RV insurance and any specific RV memberships or subscriptions.

After you’ve transferred ownership, the RV is no longer yours. But, your work isn’t quite finished—there’s one final step you need to take.

Step 10: Complete a Release of Liability Form

A release of liability form protects you from the repercussions of any actions the buyer takes with the RV after the sale.

If the buyer forgets or intentionally avoids registering the RV in their name, you won’t be held responsible for financial and legal damages. If they get in an accident or receive parking violations while your name is still associated with the RV in DMV records, the release of liability will absolve you.

Check your state’s DMV website to find out how to file a release of liability form for an RV. You can usually submit this form online, but make sure you understand the submission deadline; most states require filing within 5–30 days of the sale.

Pro tip: Submit your release of liability form before canceling your RV insurance. This guarantees you’re covered until the very last moment of ownership.
